Have you ever felt like you wanted to stomp out overwhelm and get more done?

Like you really want to slow down, but you are rushing around trying to get everything done like a maniac?

Why Slowing Down Will Help You Get More DoneLike you have too many fires to put out, and you’re working through your lunch breaks feeling tired and frustrated?

Oh, sure, it starts out innocently enough, but the more you work, the harder you struggle, and the less you get done.

Your inability to get more done may be a result of constantly feeling overloaded and overwhelmed.

And what’s frustrating is you have no idea what to do about it.

When you are having difficulty getting things done, you are forcing yourself to finish your tasks quickly because you are unable to take a break. You end up having:

  • A Short temper.
  • To repeat the task.
  • To go home and eat the first thing you put your hands on because you have missed a meal.
  • To crash and burn at the end of the day.

If you have too much work on your plate, getting more done can be difficult.

You find yourself rushing to meet your deadlines. You are in a hurry because you do not know how, or think it is possible, to slow down.

It took a divorce and bankruptcy in the same week for me to learn my lesson and I am here to share with you how I learned to get things done.

The following are five reasons why slowing down will actually help you get more done.

1.   Relax upon waking sets you up for a productive day.

The daily habit of relaxing upon waking is a simple and effective way to prepare your mind for a productive day.

When you relax upon waking, you give your mind and body the rest they need. It is also easier and faster to calm your mind just after waking rather than later in the day.

This state of mind stops you from rushing, and prepares you to temper your abrupt behavior and easily cope with the feelings of overload and overwhelm of the upcoming day.

You also enter the day equipped to transform stress into success.

The following tips will help you relax upon waking:

A)   Sit up in bed with your pillows behind your back for support against the head board. (You can sit cross-legged or with your feet stretched out.)

B)   Put your hands on your lap or legs, palms up.

C)   Pick a point in front of you and focus on it.

D)   Focus for two minutes at a time and let yourself be pulled into the point. (The ultimate goal is to focus for 10 minutes without a break.)

E)   Let your breathing gradually slow down. You may blink; your eye lids will get heavy, your shoulders will relax and your eyes will gently close.

F)    You may time yourself with a timer or gentle alarm. When you hear the timer, you count to three and slowly come on back to the room as you open your eyes.

Relaxing before getting out of bed allows you to slow down, and some of my clients have reported that they were able to boost their energy naturally without caffeine.

2. Eating breakfast in bed each day fuels your body and brain.

The habit of eating breakfast in bed each day is critical to slowing down.

Your body and brain need fuel so that you are alert and alive to face the challenges of the day.

The following are two problems that I have discovered over the years working with my clients.

 They have breakfast in one of two ways:

A)   Standing up.

They get out of bed in haste and they eat their breakfast standing up.

B)   On the run.

They are in a rush and they go to the drive thru, and may only have time for a cup of coffee.

Instead, take breakfast in bed in a way to stimulate your brain and body by enjoying a bowl of cereal or oatmeal with fruits and nuts. Or you may prefer your bacon, eggs and bread etc.

Most people who grab breakfast on the run (like a cup of coffee) get run over with lack of energy during the day because they refuse to slow down and take the time to recharge.

OR, they may be eating too fast and creating indigestion.

Eating slowly on the other hand, permits you to taste your food, and experience the delectable flavors, which makes you feel good.

This appreciation eliminates your habit of missing meals and binging at dinner time.

Eating breakfast in bed, allows you to start your day full of energy.

Your tank is full of gas and you are ready to handle any challenges during the day.

When you fuel your body and brain, you have that awesome feeling of vim and vigor that propels you throughout the day and allows you to get more done.

3. Staying offline the first three hours of the day reduces your feeling of overwhelm and makes you more productive.

The habit of staying offline for the first three hours of the day creates a ritual or sacred time for you to focus on important tasks when your mind is clear.

How often do you lose your temper because you have no system for handling emergencies?

You just freak out because you have no idea what to do.

These sudden outbursts, can wreck havoc on your health and sometimes raise your blood pressure.

Taking time offline first thing in the morning is a great way to work on important tasks without distraction.

This practice creates a buffer for slowing down and soothes your short temper first thing in the morning.

When you go off radar, you need to provide a way to handle emergencies (emails and important calls being missed).

You could use an out-of-office email responder telling people how to get in touch with in case of emergencies.

Or, forward all your email to one email address.

Then check your emails every hour when you take a break offline. And any critical messages like — website down — you address right away.

This amazing ability to be organized, offline to complete important tasks while ensuring that emergencies are taken care of, lets you slow down.

You are now in control of your sanity, because you are no longer crashing and burning at the end of the day, but instead are cool as a cucumber.

And you get more done.

4. Rushing to put out fires without water leaves you exhausted and unproductive.

The habit of rushing to put out fires without water not only leaves you exhausted and unproductive but it is also very frustrating.

So what is rushing to put out fires without water?

It is like a carpenter learning the trade on the fly, not sure he wants to be carpenter (maybe he wants to be a plumber) and not having the proper tools for the job.

Let’s examine the two challenges that I have noticed while working with my clients:

A)   They leave everything up to chance.

Whether it is work related or personal, they are always busy DOING because they have no rules or boundaries — they may have difficulty saying no.

B)   They have no structure.

They have no idea what they want in their work or personal lives.

So they take the first job or the first relationship that comes along, and now they are wondering why they are feeling miserable and exhausted.

These challenges have a solution – an effective system for handling job tasks:

A)   First, you do a brain dump on a sheet of paper of the tasks that need to be completed.

B)   Secondly, you do a client deadlines dump (important emails, blog posts, etc.) on another sheet of paper?

C)   Thirdly, you prioritize your tasks in order of importance and deadlines.

D)   Next, you start doing your tasks.

You also have some other time management approaches to consider.

When you relax, you have the time to implement a simple system for dealing with all your tasks.

You also have an opportunity to implement a system properly and follow it, rather than abandoning it in the midst of chaos.

You are no longer compromising and under pressure because you are laser focused. And since you’re organized, you naturally slow down which helps get more done.

5. Taking time to slow down at the end of your day allows you to be more productive the following day.

When I was in sales I had no way of separating the anxiety of work from home. 

After experimenting a little, I realized that if I drew a line under the day, and reviewed my successes and failures, I was more productive the following day.

Reviewing your day brings closure to any upsets and emotional sores of your day, because in your mind you can change any headache to the way you want it to be.

Doing this allowed me to slow down, separate work from home, eliminate all the rushing thoughts in my busy mind and allowed me to have a good night’s sleep.

Plus you also get a chance to create the perfect day in your mind.

This means that all the issues of yesterday are resolved and you do not carry the stress of these challenges over to the next day.

Even better news is you also get insights and solutions to pressing problems which you can implement the next day.

In some cases my students discovered amazing solutions to stressing problems and the wonderful positive experiences of the day.

Reviewing your day is a form of relaxation that allows you to slow down, defuse your quick temper and eliminate crash and burn at the end of your day.

Most importantly, you are in the present moment, at the end of your day, which lets you get more done the following day.

Rushing isn’t the answer to having lots to do – slowing down is.

Rushing isn’t the answer to having lots to do.

A new mind set of slowing down is.

Don’t fight change. Choose instead to manage your time correctly.

Then you get done what you need to get done and still have time to relax.

Allowing your dreams to get more done and not feel overwhelm can become a reality.

Have the grit and guts to start using at least two of the ideas I suggested right now.

And start your mission to take control of overwhelm.
